What Are Medical-Grade Adhesive Tapes?
The phrase “medical-grade adhesive tapes” describes a bit of a catch-all category. Medical-grade adhesive tapes can cover everything from industrial acrylic foam tapes and thin bonding tapes – used in the assembly of medical hard goods and durable medical equipment – to the many medical-grade polyester non-woven adhesive tapes used in stick-to-skin applications for disposable health and beauty products and long-term wearables like remote heart and glucose monitoring.
There is one thing all these items have in common, though, and it’s that they all pass some form of biocompatibility testing in order to truly be labeled “medical-grade.”
Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are used widely throughout all areas of the medical industry. They are an integral part of medical component assembly, on-body medical devices, device attachment, surgical dressing, wound care, and more. PSAs are triggered by pressure and don’t require solvent, water, or heat to activate the adhesive.
